The unscheduled snow has left me in a quandary re exercising my car this morning. I think I'll risk it though.

On my travels this week I couldn't help noticing that the roads were once again riddled with potholes, even on major motorways. I haven't seen that since the era of austerity circa 2011.

I wonder is it something to do with the new financial year coming up, and they've spent their hole-filling budget for this year?

^^

I hit a horrendous pothole at the weekend at about 50mph, which sent a terrific jolt through the car. It was hidden in a small puddle at the edge of the road. I understand the cold weather we recently had made things worse due to the freezing water which expands and breaks the roads apart, but the situation wasn't exactly great beforehand.

I gave my car a 15-minute idle this afternoon to make sure the battery would be OK for starting it tomorrow. I scraped the snow off it really slowly to stretch the time out as long as possible.

I've spent some time this evening checking out different villages in north Essex and Hertfordshire trying to locate a particular crossroads where we always used to get held up on our way to family holidays 40 years ago.

It's a tight crossroads with traffic lights and a white-painted pub on one side of the road. It ain't Takeley - loose crossroads with lots of space - and it ain't Hatfield Heath, which has a load of confusing side roads meeting at odd angles which certainly don't make a crossroads.

I do wonder if I haven't mixed up those two places with the staggered crossroads at Baldock, where I'm still getting held up on the way to my own holidays 40 years later. But it seems odd that I should be misled by my memories of that place, while retaining detailed memories of the immediately preceding twists and turns of the A507 across the hills from Buntingford to Baldock, which shocked me with their accuracy when I first retraced the route in 2008.

I too have memories of particular bits of roads from various holidays as a child, but don't know where they'd be.

I have decided not to exercise the car tomorrow. I can get away with that from time to time.

My car's making a hellish screeching noise somewhere around the front left wheel. It's fairly intermittent but does seem to get worse whenever I turn while reversing. Pretty sure it isn't the brakes so I've put up with over the week but now it seems to be scaring the neighbours so looks like I'm going to the go-rage tomorrow.
