Grabbed by the Perseids

Because it's a strange world out there.

Grabbed by the Perseids

Postby Call_of_the_Wendigo on Thu Aug 12, 2010 7:35 pm

:fireball:
Well, we've had talk of it in various places but, as tonight's the night when it's supposed to start hitting the peak of its mighty powers, I think we need a special Perseids Meteor Shower thread. Apparently, they'll be at their busiest from 11 o'clock onwards until dawn - possibly in the north east sky though don't quote me on that.

So, will you be looking out for them?

If so, here's where you can report your sightings.

There are various Perseid sighting threads here for those wanting a wider perspective, and who can put up with a bit of astronomy-speak.

It's quite clear here, think I might go for a drive in a bit, somewhere where there is slightly less light pollution.

I've got those horrible Velux type windows and can only see the sky (clear with some wispy cloud) through a foot wide gap.

Also - I haven't seen one since and I'm starting to think it was another moth. :(

It's still quite light here. I did get excited when I first looked out the window, until I realised it was a plane :(

There's a great big four story block of maisonettes, on a rise, in the direction I'm supposed to be looking - every single window on it spilling out light. Even if the sky does clear, it looks like I'm going to have to wait till everyone's gone to bed if I'm going to have a chance of seeing anything.

Actually the gap is about 6" and I swear it was a shooting star dammit!

God, I'd forgotten how absurdly thrilling it is, staring at the sky, waiting, yearning...

Yep - I'm not called FanBoy3 on there though, I have an astrothemed name.

Went out for a look myself just now, still too light in the north. Also some thin high cloud.

Just spent the last 25 mins in a chilly back garden with a grumbling Mrs F and got to see 5 of them. The first was so bright and lasted 5 or 6 seconds, we both waited for the bang as we thought it was a firework. The others were just quick streaks of light that barely lasted a second.

There's thick cloud moved in now :bawl:

Still not a clear patch of sky in sight. I HATE this country. That's it, I'm taking my :rollingpin: to the sky.
