At the top of that hill are now loads of newish houses. That big grassy slope is now almost completely covered in trees, flowers and bushes, with a stone wall at its base.

Just up from the bus stop in that photo is the junction with Daresbury Road and, if you go down Daresbury Road, guess what's facing you at the bottom of it?

I'm pleased to see that the Mini Metro has been moved away from the bus stop.

That's not actually in the bus stop, it's further down the road. The bus stop is just behind the camera in the Google Surveillance picture.

Having said that the Land Rover type thing does look as if it was left there about 10 minutes after the Mini Metro drove away in 1983, and hasn't been moved since.

Yes, ironically the green Land Rover in the new Google Street View footage is actually older than the Mini Metro in the old photo.

By the way, on that http://www.towerblock.eca.ed.ac.uk/ website there are many other photos of tower blocks in other parts of Sheffield. It's a fully searchable website and includes photos of long-gone tower blocks in my area too.

My response to that is ambivalent.

On the one hand, it does not include six prominent tower blocks in the town where I currently reside.

On the other, it does include the only tower block in the town where I grew up

in the shadow of which I got really drunk the day after the end of term in summer 1987 :box:

Looking at that Chelmsford tower block on Google Street View it's had a recent bizarre makeover with new building thing attached to it! :dontpanic:

Oh dear oh dear

I never liked Chelmsford after about 1998, it went all Romfordy like it had moved 20 miles closer to London.

Luckily by then I had moved to a more yokelly part of Essex.

Btw if you go out of Salerno Way in your link, turn right onto Melbourne Avenue, and go forward about 50 yards to the gap in the hedge on your right, and look across the park to the distant trees, it was amongst those trees that I got drunk that heady day in July 1987.

It has photos of the demolished Greenhill/Bradway Flats, of which there are virtually no photos in existence and which I think even Buttertubs might not be aware of, so obscure and long forgotten are they. Even the Wikipedia page on Sheffield's tower blocks doesn't acknowledge their existence. http://www.towerblock.eca.ed.ac.uk/development/greenhill-bradway

By tower block standards, it looks quite nice.

They looked fairly pleasant, in 1987 at least. Why did they get demolished whilst others got makeovers?

I don't know. Information about them is very hard to come by. I only found out they existed because I saw an aerial photo of them on an architect's website and it claimed they were in Gleadless Valley but I didn't recognise any of the roads around them. When I asked on SSC where it might be, someone identified the area they were in, which was miles away from from Gleadless Valley.
