Is it time our national animal was the hedgehog?

For all who love our furry, scaly, slimy and feathery friends because where would we be without them?

Is it time our national animal was the hedgehog?

Postby Call_of_the_Wendigo on Sun Sep 06, 2009 5:36 pm

It's always seemed bizarre to me that, while other countries have national animals that actually exist in those countries (America's Bald Eagle, Russia's Brown Bear) we have as our national animal, a lion, which' the last I hears wasn't generally associated with these fair isles. However, it's recently come to my attention that the rest of the world is in fact in awe of the hedgehog. Apparently, in Chinese zoos, nobody gives a stuff about pandas or tigers. No; they're all too busy crowding round the hedeghog enclosure to gasp at the strange, exotic creature from the mysterious and far-flung land of Britain. Therefore I propose that we make the hedgehog our national animal and, if China is anything to go by, the world will once more be in awe of us.

How can a hedgehog be our national animal when I haven't even ever seen one in the wild - other than a number of them 'asleep' by the side of the road. :(

I've seen more lions. Not in the wild but in zoos.

Yes, it's weird how they go really flat when they're asleep...

Get a petition going on the Prime Ministers website, it could be just what he needs to boost his popularity.

I think if it becomes our national animal then better provisions should be made to allow them to cross the roads safely. I would propose miniature crossings with buttons low enough for them to press, and maybe some of their spikes could be genetically engineered to glow in the dark so drivers can see them at night

^^

I'm sure I remember the beginning of Challenge Anneka showed some cartoon hedgehogs happily using a tunnel that Anneka had supposedly built for them to cross under a road.

That didn't take you long! So my memory hasn't failed me considering I haven't seen those scared-then-happy hedgehogs for X number of years.

Ooh, that's interesting, there are no hedgehogs in America or Australia. And they only have them in New Zeaflibbland because they imported them.
Even me?
